Our First (and sometimes worst) Experiences in The U.S.A
My Worst Day the U.S.A
by Belee
It was 5 years ago. My husband and I were living in an apartment in New York. One day my husband went to Pennsylvania for 5 days of training. I used to work in an Italian food store as a chaser. That day the store was busy; I got out of work at 9:30pm. It was 10:00pm when I got home. I was by myself at home. I took my shower, had my diner and talked with my husband over the phone. After that, I went to bed. It was around 2:30 am. I couldn’t sleep. I was really sick. I had a bad headache and fever. I was sweating and shivering too. I called my husband, but I couldn’t explain it to him even. So my husband called 911 and they came to my home and they took me to the emergency room. My husband started driving that morning and he met me at the hospital. I stayed in hospital for two days and then I went to home.
That was my worst day in the U.S.A.
My First Week in The United States
By Sonia Nunez
In August 2008, I traveled for the first-time to the United States. In the Newark airport, New Jersey, I met Larry, my husband, for the second time. I was very happy, nervous, and confused because he spoke English and I spoke Spanish. I arrived to Newark at 11.pm. I came to him and said, “Hello,” and he said, “Hello,” too. Before we had only communicated with each other using messenger and Google translator. We walked to the restaurant and ordered dinner. We did not talk and we could only smile at each other. I thought that this relationship was impossible.
I had a week holiday in The United States. He showed me the most beautiful and interesting tourist places of New York. We went to Central Park and The Empire State Building, and we took the ferry and a tour bus to see many more places. I did not talk much, but always smiled. We took many photos and longs walks and ate delicious meals.
He was widowed and I was divorced. We got married for the second time, and now we have a good relationship. I will never forget my first week in The United States.

My Worst Day in the U.S.A.

I remember my worst day in the U.S.A. I will never forget this day. My daughter was in day care in West Haven. I took the bus to downtown New Haven, but I didn’t know the bus to West Haven. With my little English, I asked, but I didn’t understand too much. I took the wrong bus. I walked for about one hour to find the place. I carried my daughter in my arms. I was very tired and sad.

My Worst Day in the U.S.A.

My worst day in the USA happened when I went to the supermarket, and I needed change, but I forgot how to say "change “in English. Because of that, I used my body language to tell the cashier that I needed change. This was my first time talking to people by myself, and I felt terrible because I forgot the word. Then I decided to learn more English. I only wanted to learn more English even before coming to The State, so I can get my Masters Degree. That is why I researched where and when to learn English to accomplish my dream. Now I feel great about my English. I’m not afraid to talk to people anymore. I know I need to practice English more, but I’m not afraid to try.
